FAQs

Hot air ballooning is full of adventure, thrills and the wonder of Jules Verne lore. Gypsy Flights understands that passengers who are new to hot air ballooning may be experiencing a mix of emotions, including some trepidation, before committing to their first "Lighter Than Air" flight. That is what we've put together a set of answers to some commonly asked questions about hot air ballooning, and the operations of Gypsy Flights.

If you have further questions, beyond what we've answered here, then feel free to ask us. We're always glad to share our knowledge and love of hot air ballooning.

How do I prepare?

What do I wear?
We recommend comfortable clothing and sturdy walking shoes. Layers are a good idea as it is often cool before the sun comes up but warms up quickly once it has risen. Temperatures in the air are similar to those on the ground.

Hot Air Ballooning Preparation

How long is an average balloon flight?
Usually a balloon flight lasts about an hour. At an average wind speed of about 5 mph, a balloon will fly 2 - 8 miles. Ground crews follow the balloon, talking on the radio with the pilot. The balloon will land in an open area and the ground crew is there to help with the recovery and take everyone back to the launch site.

What if I need to use the facilities?
Passengers should plan on being away from nearby facilities anywhere from one to two hours.

Can I bring my camera?
We strongly encourage everyone to bring cameras to this very special event. We encourage you to have a neck strap for your camera - to help prevent it from falling out of the basket. Bring your own extra batteries, or load them fresh ahead of time. Don't rely on old batteries.

What Safey Measures Are in Place Aboard The Gypsy Drifter?
Did you know that hot air balloon Pilots must be licensed by the FAA? Because the Gypsy Drifter carries paying passengers and flies at the request of businesses, special events, or even for the film industry - our pilots carry Commercial Ratings under the FAA's "Lighter Than Air" licensing rules. Commercial Hot Air Balloon Pilots are tested both with written exams and in flight to maintain their licenses.

Many more aspects of The Gypsy Drifter contribute to safety. Experienced pilots and crew, radio and cell-phone communications, flight instrumentation to name a few.
